The Pros and Cons of Co-roasting

And who it’s good for

It’s no surprise we’re huge fans of co-roasting (disclaimer: we run a co-roastery) however, we are also huge fans of transparency and we thought we’d help people make the decision of whether or not it’s the right one for their business.

So here we go.

Pros

  • Save money: our members have made net savings of up to 50% — reach out and we can model the potential savings for your operation together.
  • Control quality: be in charge of your QC (quality control), and close the critically important feedback loop between the roaster and brewer (it can even be the same person!).
  • Be creative: Create your own blends, your own brand, and carve your unique niche in the market.
  • Learn: Roasting your own is incredibly rewarding in and of itself–your understanding and appreciation of coffee will grow by leaps and bounds.
  • Have a break: Have an emergency? Going on holidays? Want to take a break from roasting yourself? Don’t worry–our team of expert roasters can cover you while you’re away.
  • Quality Control: Gain access to equipment including a cupping lab, moisture and colour analysers, and a sample roaster (all included at no extra charge with ECRE).
  • Spend more time roasting: A co-roastery takes care of the admin and operations and you focus on your craft.
  • Growth: Provide a new avenue for your team to expand their knowledge and skills.

Cons

  • Sharing: If you aren’t a fan of sharing your stuff, a shared space might not be for you; The space is shared by many different members of our community who support each other so you’ll have to share all the equipment and space with our community.
  • Control: The space is run and managed by ECRE so our members can focus on making coffee; if you want full control over the design of the space, you won’t get it here.
  • Space: If you need to roast your roaster at it’s capacity (roasting 5+ days per week) or if you are looking at roasting 1000s of kgs of beans a week, a shared space won’t be able to cater to those needs.

Who can co-roast?

Anyone really.

ECRE Co-roast makes coffee roasting accessible to anyone who has ever dreamt of roasting their own. We’ve worked to eliminate the barriers of entry that used to stop many aspiring roasters from beginning their journey with giving more people access to state-of-the-art roasters, cupping lab and QC equipment, expert guidance and support, green coffee supply networks, packaging equipment, and a community to support you.

And the price. Well it’s pretty transparent. You only pay for the time you spend on the roaster.

Want to feel even better about co-roasting?

And as the first ever co-roasting company to be a member of the World Coffee Research Checkoff Program, we will donate 1c for every kilo you roast to WCR to help support their important work, such as developing climate-change and disease resistant coffee varietals that also taste delicious.
